On December 19, 2018, protests broke out in small cities throughout Sudan amid an economic crisis, eventually reaching the country's capital, Khartoum. These protests posed the biggest challenge to Sudan's longest-serving dictator, Omar al-Bashir, who throughout his regime did everything he could to remain in power. Bashir relied on various security sectors to protect him from being overthrown. However, his plan ultimately failed on April 11, 2019, when the country's army, the Sudanese Armed Forces, and a paramilitary force, the Rapid Support Forces, sided with the protesters and carried out a military coup, toppling Bashir.

Tension between Sudan military and transitional government grows
One of Sudan's top military leaders says the transitional government that took over during the 2019 coup needs to take a more active role.
But politicians claim the military has resisted reforms and accused it of trying to seize power.
After a war of words, the military withdrew its protection of the civilian committee formed to dismantle the former governing party and fight corruption, prompting demonstrations in support of the civilian leadership in Khartoum.
Al Jazeera's Hiba Morgan reports on how an attempted coup last week has worsened tension between the military and the government's civilian faction.

South Sudan unified army: Gov't troops and ex-rebels join ranks
The ranks of South Sudan's army are now made up of both government troops and former rebel fighters.
It is part of the peace deal signed in 2018.
However, many in the new army do not have weapons, due to an arms embargo - and that is raising concerns about how it will maintain peace and security.

Sudan's conflict explained in 5 minutes: ‘Lawlessness on the streets of Khartoum’
Who are the paramilitary RSF and why are they in conflict with the Sudan army?
The unabated fighting has killed hundreds and tipped Africa's third-largest country - where around a quarter of people already relied on food aid - into a humanitarian disaster.
Instead of a ceasefire, the army has entered a new phase, fighting the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on the ground, after having stuck largely to air strikes across the capital, with fiercer clashes in central Khartoum, since the power struggle erupted.

The end of Bashir's regime brought hope to the protesters, but they remained skeptical about the men who had overthrown him. SAF’s Abdel Fattah Burhan and RSF’s Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (aka Hemeti) took control of the country after the coup and made repeated promises to hand over power to civilians, which would put Sudan on a democratic path. But they continuously delayed fulfilling their promises and instead turned against each other, vying for power in Sudan. The two men have brutally interrupted Sudan’s pro-democracy revolution.
The fighting between the two men's forces started out in Sudan's capital, Khartoum, and spread all over the country. Recent ceasefire breakdowns have led to more bursts of violence, especially in Darfur, a region still reeling from the aftermath of a genocide at the hands of Bashir's regime.
Watch the latest episode of Atlas to understand how their feud has undermined the democratic aspirations of the protesters and put Sudan at risk of a civil war.

Opening remarks by Volker Perthes, Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Sudan and Head of the United Nations Integrated Transition Assistance Mission in Sudan, on the situation in Sudan and South Sudan at the Security Council, 9289th meeting.
The head of the United Nations Integrated Transition Assistance Mission in Sudan (UNITAMS), Volker Perthes, said that Sudanese stakeholders “are closer than they have ever been to a settlement and the return to a civilian government.”
Addressing the Security Council today (20 Mar) on the situation in Sudan, Perthes said, “When I last briefed you on 8th of December, the Sudanese military and a broad range of civilian actors had just signed a political framework agreement.”
He continued, “This was a watershed moment and ushered into a new phase of the political process which aims to lead to a new transitional period.”
Perthes noted, “Today, we are the closest we have been to a solution, although challenges remain.”
The Special Representative said each consultation gathered hundreds of Sudanese women and men “most of them came from outside the capital, representing a broad social, professional, and political spectrum.”
He stressed, “even some who had earlier publicly rejected the political process joined these conferences or workshops.”
He added, “Things are moving fast. Yesterday, the military and civilian signatories met the Trilateral Mechanism, the Quad, and the European Union again, to confirm their commitment to the process and speak about the next steps.”
Perthes also noted that collective efforts from the international community “are needed now more than ever.”
Also briefing the Security Council, Al-Harith Idriss al-Harith Mohamed, Permanent Representative of Sudan to the United Nations, said, “The transition government is committed to ensure the implementation of the updated matrix in line with its new timetables so as to create a strong momentum to iron out these final issues.”
He concluded, “Peace is the key issue in Sudan and it is the overarching priority of the state. It is the key for security issues and development questions in the country.”

South Sudan President Salva Kiir and rebel leader Riek Machar agreed on Thursday to form a unity government, a long-delayed step towards ending six years of war that has killed hundreds of thousands of people.
Kiir said the new government will be formed on Saturday and he will appoint Machar as his first vice president, or top deputy, on Friday.
The president said security arrangements, one crucial issue, will be resolved after the government's formation. He said the protection of Machar and others with the opposition will be under his responsibility.
